Course Description
A systematic introduction to the theory, practice and mathematical underpinnings of agent-based modeling (ABM), with an emphasis on infectious disease modeling, on understanding the mathematical basis of ABM, and comparing and contrasting it to compartmental modeling. Course lectures will cover the breadth of the agent-based modeling process and agile modeling, including model conceptualization and scoping, model architecture, design and formulation, model implementation, testing for verification and validation, calibration and sensitivity analysis, and scenario evaluation. Additional methodological topics include different mathematical formulations underlying ABMs, declarative vs. imperative model specification, the mathematics of statecharts, dimensional quantities and dimensional scaling behaviour, examining the different scaling behavior, stylized vs. empirically grounded modeling, and pattern oriented modeling.
